Rivers State Assembly Blames Suspended Governor Fubara For Crisis

The Rivers State House of Assembly, in an official statement issued by its Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, has placed responsibility for the ongoing political turmoil in the state on the suspended governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

The Speaker accused Fubara of engaging in authoritarian and oppressive practices, which include consistent disobedience of court rulings and orders, a failure to govern in alignment with his constitutional oath, and the unlawful obstruction of legislative activities.

According to Amaewhule, these actions played a direct role in escalating the crisis that has plagued Rivers State for over a year.

Amaewhule emphasized that the governor’s disregard for legal decisions, which has been affirmed by judicial authorities, has significantly disrupted the functioning of the Rivers State House of Assembly. He stated that the legislative arm had been prevented from carrying out its duties due to unconstitutional interference by the executive, which contributed to the instability currently affecting governance in the state.

In response to the President’s declaration, Amaewhule described the intervention as a necessary and well-intended measure aimed at protecting the interests of both the state and the nation. He urged Rivers State residents to remain calm and allow the newly appointed Sole Administrator to take charge of governance.

While acknowledging that the decision was not the initial course of action sought by the Assembly, Amaewhule reassured the public that the lawmakers would fully comply with the directive and support the new leadership structure. He reiterated that their primary concern was ensuring stability and restoring effective governance.

“The President has made this decision in the best interest of the country,” Amaewhule stated, appealing to the people of Rivers State to cooperate with the Sole Administrator. He expressed confidencethat the newly appointed official would act decisively to bring stability to the state and uphold the principles of good governance.

Additionally, the Speaker reaffirmed the Assembly’s full support for the Sole Administrator, pledging to provide any necessary assistance to facilitate the restoration of order and functionality in the state government. He assured constituents that the legislature remains committed to upholding democratic governance and ensuring that Rivers State emerges from this period of political uncertainty stronger and more stable.

The declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State marks a critical turning point in the prolonged political crisis that has engulfed the state. It underscores the need for immediate corrective action to restore governance, uphold constitutional order, and safeguard the interests of the people.
