Veteran Nigerian actor, Chiwetalu Agu, has advised singles to thoroughly investigate their prospective spouses before getting married.
In a trending video shared on Instagram, Agu cautioned against rushing into marriage due to peer pressure or desperation. He emphasized that marriage should not be treated as a life-or-death commitment and urged individuals in toxic or abusive relationships to seek help or leave for their own safety.
“Marriage is not a do-or-die affair. If you have an abusive partner or are in a toxic relationship, run for your life. If you are not happy in your marriage, seek help or walk away,” he stated.
The veteran actor also highlighted the dangers of staying in harmful marriages for the sake of children or financial security, warning that such decisions could have tragic consequences.
“Divorce is better than rest in peace. Some people stay because of their children or because their spouse is wealthy. But what happens when tragedy strikes? A woman was burnt to death by her husband, now, who will take care of the kids? The husband who killed her? Or relatives who have their own families to care for?”
Agu further advised individuals to conduct thorough background checks before committing to marriage, cautioning against making impulsive decisions based solely on physical attraction or societal expectations.
“Always investigate a person’s background before deciding to marry them. Saying, ‘She is beautiful’ or ‘He is handsome, I must marry them at all costs’, that mindset can lead to disaster.”
My mates are all married, but I’m still single, such pressure can lead to fatal mistakes. I pray that none of us make decisions that will cost us our lives in the name of marriage, in Jesus’ name.”
