President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a federal university in Southern Kaduna, marking a significant step toward addressing the region’s educational and developmental challenges.
This announcement was made by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a condolence visit to the Kukah family following the death of His Highness Yohanna Sidi Kukah, the Agwom Akulu of Ikulu Chiefdom and a family member of Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto. The visit took place in the Ikulu Kingdom, located in the Kamuru area of Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, Kaduna State.
A statement issued on Monday by Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), confirmed the development. Vice President Shettima disclosed that discussions are also underway to establish a Federal Medical Centre in Kafanchan, further demonstrating the federal government’s commitment to addressing the region’s healthcare needs.
Speaking at the residence of the late traditional ruler, Vice President Shettima emphasized the administration’s dedication to improving Southern Kaduna. He highlighted the recent appointment of General Christopher Musa as Chief of Defence Staff as a testament to President Tinubu’s focus on addressing the security challenges in the area.
“With Senator Sunday Katung and the member of the House of Representatives, we have engaged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and he has graciously approved the establishment of a federal university in Southern Kaduna,” Shettima announced. “Be assured that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu cares deeply about the people of Kaduna State, particularly Southern Kaduna.”
The Vice President also praised Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, for his inclusive approach to governance. He noted that the federal government would collaborate with the state government to bring development to Southern Kaduna, particularly in the areas of road infrastructure and other critical needs.
“Governance is about ensuring that all components of society feel connected and have a sense of belonging,” Shettima said, reiterating the federal government’s commitment to the region’s growth.
During the visit, Bishop Kukah expressed appreciation to Vice President Shettima on behalf of his family for the condolence visit and the federal government’s initiatives. He pointed out the challenging terrain of the Ikulu community, emphasizing the poor state of road infrastructure in the area.
“I want to thank you on behalf of this family for your presence here,” Bishop Kukah stated. “It took you over three and a half hours to reach us because of the broken and poorly maintained roads. We are honoured by your visit and hope that you will continue to be a friend to the Ikulu nation and this community.”
The Vice President’s visit and the announcement of new federal projects underscore the Tinubu administration’s focus on fostering inclusive development and addressing the needs of historically underserved regions like Southern Kaduna.
