Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has been suggested as a potential candidate for the governorship of Lagos State in the 2027 elections. This speculation has gained traction following the circulation of a video on social media platforms.
The video serves as a biographical profile of Seyi Tinubu, highlighting various aspects of his life, including his educational background, professional career, and philanthropic efforts in Nigeria. It further underscores his involvement in initiatives aimed at youth development, portraying him as a figure with the capacity to inspire and lead.
This development follows endorsements by certain groups supporting Seyi Tinubu’s candidacy. These endorsements suggest that he could succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whose tenure will end in 2027. For instance, the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders, during a gathering in Owerri, Imo State, advocated for Seyi Tinubu’s potential governorship bid. They even hinted that he could be welcomed as a candidate for governorship in states like Osun or Imo.
Similarly, a group known as Friends of Seyi has publicly backed him, citing his vision, intellectual abilities, and leadership qualities as evidence of his capacity to govern Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub.
Despite the endorsements, not everyone is in support of this idea. Joe Igbokwe, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed strong reservations on the matter.
In a Facebook post, he described the wave of endorsements as a deliberate distraction aimed at undermining the president. Igbokwe criticized the push for Seyi Tinubu’s governorship bid, questioning the intentions behind it.
He remarked, “Who are these faceless people pushing Seyi Tinubu for Lagos governor? This is a needless distraction. To pull PBAT (President Bola Ahmed Tinubu) down is their target. Ruling Lagos is not the job of boys.”
This debate has sparked conversations about the political future of Seyi Tinubu and the broader implications of dynastic politics within Nigeria.
