Following the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s decisive victory in the Ondo State governorship election, the party’s National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has unveiled an ambitious plan to consolidate APC’s dominance across the South-West geopolitical zone.
Ganduje described the victory as a stepping stone toward achieving political homogeneity in the region, vowing to secure power in the remaining PDP-controlled states of Osun and Oyo.
Speaking confidently about the party’s strategy, Ganduje declared, “Our next target now is this geopolitical zone, the South-West. You know we are good at hitting targets. That is Osun State and Oyo State. We assure you we will do what is necessary to bring them into the fold.”
The APC solidified its control in the South-West with a landslide victory in Ondo State, where the party garnered 366,781 votes, far ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s 117,845 votes. This triumph saw the incumbent governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, retain his position. Aiyedatiwa, who initially served as deputy governor, assumed office following the death of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu in December 2023. He emerged victorious despite stiff competition from 16 other candidates, including Agboola Ajayi of the PDP.
With this latest win, the APC now governs four of the six South-West states: Lagos, Ogun, Ekiti, and Ondo. Ganduje emphasized the party’s determination to reclaim Osun and Oyo, which are currently under PDP control, as part of its broader strategy to cement its influence in the region.
The Ondo election result reflects APC’s growing strength and underscores its focus on strategic political expansion. Ganduje’s remarks highlight the party’s commitment to building a unified political base in the South-West, bolstered by its track record of governance and electoral success in the region.
