ANAMBRA: Treat Your Domestic Helpers, Every Child Under Your Care As Your Own Children – Awada Secondary School Principal, Lady Lilian Ikegwuonu, Urges Parents, Guardians

The Principal of Awada Secondary School, Anambra State Lady Lilian Ikegwuonu, made a heartfelt appeal to all parents, urging them to treat the children under their care, whether theirs or not, with love and compassion.

Speaking at the school’s 2024 freshman orientation program held on Tuesday, she emphasized that every child deserves the same attention, care, and opportunities as a biological child.

She expressed her concern about the noticeable difference in the treatment of children living with their biological parents compared to those who are domestic helpers or wards in other households. She advised parents to embrace every child in their care as their own, ensuring they receive essentials such as books, proper uniforms, and other necessities to foster a supportive environment for growth and learning.

Addressing the new students, the Principal encouraged them to focus on their studies and be mindful of their peer groups. She advised them to choose friends carefully, selecting those who are serious and diligent in their academic pursuits.

In her words to the parents, she said, “Parents and guardians, it is essential to check on your children when they come home from school. Review their notebooks, inquire about assignments, and ensure they have the textbooks they need to keep up with lessons. Textbooks are crucial for their success.”

Mrs Ikegwuonu, also commended Governor Professor Chukwuma Soludo for his free education policy, which has lifted the financial burden of school fees from many struggling families. “This is a joyous relief for parents,” she noted. “However, it is now the responsibility of the parents to support the governor’s efforts by providing children with the necessary resources, such as books and appropriate uniforms, to enhance their learning experience and build their self-esteem.”

Taking the opportunity to address broader needs, Lady Lilian Ikegwuonu, called on the government to improve critical infrastructure at Awada Secondary School, especially by constructing additional classroom blocks, equipping laboratories, and providing functional computers. These enhancements, she said, would ensure students receive quality education in a conducive environment that reflects best practices.

Vice Principal of Academics, Mrs. Nriezedi, also spoke at the event, encouraging the new students to commit to their studies, work hard, and remain focused. She stressed that dedication to learning is essential for building a bright future and bringing pride to their families.
