The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has announced his party’s ambition to secure control of Rivers State’s political leadership in the future. Ganduje expressed this goal while welcoming Dawari Ibietela George, the 2023 governorship candidate from the Action Alliance (AA), who recently joined the APC.
During the event, Ganduje stated that the APC plans to “rebuild and reposition” its Rivers State chapter to establish a significant influence in the region. He commended George’s decision to join the party, describing him as a “big fish” and lauding his political expertise. Ganduje expressed confidence that George’s presence would enhance the APC’s strength in Rivers State.
Emphasizing inclusivity, Ganduje reassured George and other new members of equal standing within the APC, promising that the party would construct a solid foundation to welcome them fully. He stated, “You are now equal members with every other member of the party. We are committed to broadening democracy in the country.”
This declaration from Ganduje occurs amidst ongoing tensions between Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. Allegations have circulated suggesting that Wike might be collaborating with Tony Okocha, a former APC state chairman facing challenges within the party, although Wike has refuted these claims.
Adding to the political landscape, Okocha recently mentioned that efforts would be made to “de-market” Governor Fubara ahead of the 2027 governorship election, potentially reshaping the political dynamics in Rivers State.
