Police authorities in Enugu State have taken action following the alleged killing of Okezie Nwamba, a musician popularly known as Igbo-Jah. Reports indicate that Nwamba was shot by a police inspector at the Anti-Cult Unit of the Enugu State Police Command on Friday.
The incident sparked public outrage, leading to protests as hundreds of residents marched to the anti-cult unit’s headquarters, with some attempting to set it on fire.
In response to the situation, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the musician’s death. The Enugu State Police Command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed on Saturday that the officer involved, Inspector Joseph Ozonwanji, is currently detained and will face legal consequences once the investigation is complete.
Ndukwe, a deputy superintendent of police, also released a photograph of the inspector in custody as evidence of the ongoing disciplinary measures.
Additionally, the Commissioner of Police for Enugu State, Kanayo Uzuegbu, paid a condolence visit to the musician’s family, accompanied by representatives from the state government. During the visit, Uzuegbu expressed his condolences to Nwamba’s family and friends, reassuring them and the wider Enugu community that the investigation would be conducted swiftly and that justice would be served.
He emphasized the Police Force’s commitment to discipline, stating that officers who violate protocols are held accountable for their actions.
In his statement, Uzuegbu urged Nigerians to maintain their trust in the Nigerian police and assured them that the Force would act justly in handling the matter.
