Tensions are running high in Enugu, popularly known as the Coal City, after the death of Igbo Jah, a well-known Ogene musician, who was allegedly shot by a police officer from the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Enugu State Police Command.
The incident has sparked widespread anger, with young protesters gathering in the Obiagu and Asata areas of the city, lighting bonfires to express their frustration and demand justice.
NewdayReporters observed that the tragic event took place on Friday night when Igbo Jah, whose real name was Okezie Chikezie Mba, visited the Anti-Cult Unit’s headquarters in what was initially a friendly interaction. However, as he was leaving, a police officer allegedly discharged his rifle, hitting the musician.
Although reports say that the shooting was an “accidental discharge,” the musician was critically wounded and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The Enugu State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement released on Saturday by their spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe. According to DSP Ndukwe, “A male Police Inspector attached to the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad has been arrested and detained in connection with the alleged killing of the traditional Ogene musician, Igbo Jah.”
The shooting reportedly occurred at around 8:10 p.m. on October 25, 2024, at the squad’s headquarters.
The police statement noted that, for reasons yet unknown, the officer fired his weapon as Igbo Jah was leaving, resulting in the fatal injury. DSP Ndukwe added that the musician’s body has been taken to the mortuary, where an autopsy will be conducted as part of the investigation.
Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The Commissioner has emphasized that prompt and decisive disciplinary measures will be applied against the responsible officer and any others found involved.
He described the incident as deeply regrettable and conveyed his condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Igbo Jah.
CP Uzuegbu also urged those connected to the deceased to remain calm and cooperate with the investigation, assuring that the responsible parties will face justice.
The Commissioner underscored that such actions would not be tolerated within the command and assured the public that any individuals involved will face appropriate sanctions to serve as a strong warning against misconduct.
