The Libyan Football Association (FA) has released an official statement addressing the mistreatment experienced by Nigeria’s Super Eagles and their delegation upon their arrival in Libya. The Nigerian national football team encountered significant challenges at the airport, where they were left stranded by local officials after their flight was unexpectedly diverted to a different airport.
Originally scheduled to land at another destination, the team’s flight was rerouted, leaving the Super Eagles players and representatives of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) stranded for over 15 hours at the airport. During this time, they were not provided with adequate food or other necessary provisions while waiting to make alternative travel arrangements.
Responding to the situation via an official statement posted on their X (formerly Twitter) account, the Libyan FA expressed concern over the incident. They stated, “We are deeply concerned about the recent reports regarding the diversion of the Nigerian national team’s flight ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Libya.”
The Libyan FA explained that the difficulties faced by the Nigerian team were due to logistical issues. They clarified that such disruptions are sometimes caused by routine air traffic control measures, security checks, or other logistical challenges, which can impact international travel.
These delays, while regrettable, are not uncommon and occur in airports worldwide.
“We regret any inconvenience caused,” the statement continued, “but it is important to understand that these issues are part of standard airport protocols. The rerouting of the Super Eagles’ flight was not deliberate. We hold the Nigerian national team in high regard and would like to assure them that there was no intentional misconduct behind this event.”
The Libyan FA strongly denied any allegations that their security teams or the association itself deliberately orchestrated the incident. “Such actions go against our principles and values,” they emphasized. “We reject any claims suggesting foul play or sabotage.
Last week, our own national team faced difficulties during our arrival in Nigeria for the third leg of the Africa Cup of Nations qualification. Despite the challenges we encountered, we refrained from making public accusations or questioning the integrity of Nigerian authorities.”
The statement further emphasized that football is meant to unite nations and that the Libyan FA remains committed to fairness and mutual respect both on and off the field. They reiterated that Libya prides itself on its hospitality and the respectful treatment of all visiting teams, particularly African nations and other international delegations.
“Hosting these matches is a great privilege, and we strive to ensure that all teams feel safe and respected as our guests. This commitment to equality and hospitality is a fundamental part of our culture and traditions,” the Libyan FA concluded.
They expressed hope that the misunderstanding could be resolved swiftly.
