The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared a ban on any celebrations related to Nigeria’s Independence Day throughout the South-East region on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.
In a statement released on Monday by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB urged both residents of the South-East and members of the diaspora to abstain from participating in any form of Independence Day festivities worldwide.
Powerful articulated the group’s position, stating, “IPOB calls on Biafrans, both at home and abroad, to continue with their daily routines, as we do not identify as part of Nigeria and have no connection to the British-flagged independence of 1960.”
He acknowledged that several prominent Igbo individuals played crucial roles in securing Nigeria’s independence; however, he lamented that this independence has come at a greater cost of lives from the Igbo community than from any other ethnic group in Nigeria.
He further emphasized, “Biafrans have chosen to reject the bloody flag of Nigeria’s independence and are committed to pursuing the restoration of a true, united, and prosperous Independent State of Biafra.” He called on every Biafran to denounce what he described as a “Nigerian forced unity,” while expressing hope for a future celebration of Biafran independence.
In his statement, Powerful insisted that all Ndigbo must heed the call to refrain from any activities related to Nigeria’s independence on that day. He declared, “There shall be no flying of Nigerian flags in Biafran territory, and no independence-related activities for students in Biafraland.” Instead, he encouraged everyone to go about their daily business or use the day for quality family time and rest at home, especially for those who might choose to take a break from work.
He issued a stern warning, stating, “IPOB is serious about the restoration of Biafra’s freedom and sovereignty. Do not position yourself as an adversary of the struggle by taking part in the celebrations of Nigeria’s independence tomorrow.”
He urged parents and guardians to prevent their children from attending any activities related to the Nigerian Independence Day, emphasizing, “We are closely monitoring the situation across Biafraland. As an Igbo parent, do not allow your children to be sacrificed for a country that devalues their humanity.”
