The Federal Government has officially approved a significant increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members. This development was announced through a press statement issued by Caroline Embu, the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations for the NYSC, on Wednesday night.
According to the statement, the new monthly allowance for NYSC members has been raised to N77,000, a substantial increase from the previous N33,000. The increment is set to take effect from July 2024, following the enactment of the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act of 2024.
The statement further highlighted that this change was communicated through a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated 25th September 2024. The letter was signed by the Commission’s Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta.
It was noted that prior to this approval, NYSC’s Director General, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, had paid an advocacy visit to Mr. Nta, during which he advocated for an enhanced welfare package for Corps Members.
Brigadier General Ahmed expressed his gratitude to the Federal Government for the timely approval of this increase. He is optimistic that the improved allowance will not only provide much-needed relief to Corps Members but will also elevate their morale and inspire them to contribute even more during their national service.
Before this adjustment, Corps Members received a monthly allowance of N33,000.
