Governor Soludo Sacks Paul Nwosu As Commissioner For Information, Swears In Law Mefor As Replacement

Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has approved the appointment of Dr. Law Mefor as the new Commissioner for Information for the state. Dr. Mefor succeeds Sir Paul Nwosu, who served the Anambra State Government for over a decade before being relieved of his duties.

In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Christian Aburime, Dr. Mefor was described as a distinguished academic and public intellectual with a wealth of experience. His impressive academic background includes a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, degrees in both General and Applied Psychology from the University of Jos, and a specialization in Forensic Psychology from Nasarawa State University.

Additionally, Dr. Mefor holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Calabar and a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism from the International Institute of Journalism, Abuja.

Dr. Law Mefor has established himself in the fields of education and media consultancy. For over a decade, he lectured at the International Institute of Journalism, Abuja. He is also a well-regarded syndicated columnist, having written numerous thought-provoking articles for The Cable and other mainstream and online newspapers.

In addition to his academic and media credentials, Dr. Mefor is known to have extensive experience from his time in public service, particularly during his tenure in the Nigerian Senate. Over the course of more than a decade, he served in various capacities, including as Senior Legislative Aide and Special Assistant to Senators, the Deputy Senate President, and the Senate President. His deep involvement in legislative processes and policy research enriches his qualifications for the role of Commissioner for Information.

Dr. Mefor is also an author, having penned several works. His notable publications include The Audacity of Power, a political analysis, and The Senator Ken Nnamani Portrait, a biographical work. He has also explored creative writing, authoring the novels Dream Abuja and Corpers’ Odyssey, as well as the poetry collection Phantasmagoria, among others.

During the swearing-in ceremony, Governor Soludo expressed his confidence in Dr. Mefor’s abilities, stating that his extensive experience will help to enhance the state’s communication apparatus. The Governor further emphasized that Dr. Mefor is expected to create a more vibrant information environment, which will better communicate the government’s developmental initiatives.

Governor Soludo also took the opportunity to commend Sir Paul Nwosu for his dedication and contributions during his tenure as Commissioner for Information, wishing him success in his future endeavors.

However, Sir Paul Nwosu’s time in office was not without controversy. One issue that garnered significant attention during his tenure was the persistent call by young people in the state for the reconstruction of the long-abandoned Onitsha Divisional Library. As Commissioner for Information, this matter fell under his purview, yet he appeared to ignore these appeals, leaving many dissatisfied with his performance in this regard.

As Dr. Law Mefor steps into his new role, expectations are high, particularly regarding his responsiveness to public demands. Whether he will address long-standing issues like the reconstruction of the Onitsha Library remains to be seen, but there is hope that his tenure will bring about a more proactive approach to governance.
