Recently, a story has gained traction on social media about the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) allegedly recovering 237 vibrators from female corps members at a camp in Cross River State.
This claim has been widely circulated since Monday, with a notable post by Wale Bolatito on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday drawing significant attention and engagement, amassing over 300,000 views and a range of reactions from Nigerians.
Bolatito’s post, presented as a breaking news headline, read: “Breaking: 237 vibrators recovered from ladies in NYSC Cross River Camp.” However, efforts to verify this story reveal a history of similar claims with varying details.
The claim itself is not new. There have been different versions of this story circulating over time. For example, some earlier claims date back to January and involve various locations and numbers. In January, some posts referred to the recovery of vibrators but did not specify a location, while others specified a location without mentioning the number.
In 2023, a similar version of the claim appeared, alleging that 237 vibrators were confiscated at an NYSC camp in Kwara State. This version, like the current one, was dismissed by the NYSC. Eddy Megwa, the then Director of Press and Public Relations for the NYSC, refuted the claims in an official statement, calling them an “attention-seeking fabrication” and referring to the alleged incident as “moral decadence.”
Prior to that, in 2022, various posts circulated with different numbers and locations. Some claimed 237 vibrators were recovered, others cited figures like 784, or simply referred to an unspecified number of sex toys in locations such as Edo State.
Current attempts to confirm the latest claim have yielded no evidence. Conversations with two corps members stationed at the Obubra Camp in Cross River revealed no official announcements or evidence supporting the claim. Both confirmed they had heard rumors but had seen no proof of such an incident.
Though NYSC is yet to react to the story, given the lack of evidence and the recurring nature of this rumor, it appears that the claim of 237 vibrators being recovered from female corps members at the NYSC camp in Cross River is unfounded. The story has been recycled multiple times over the years, consistently without substantiating evidence.
