Finally, President Tinubu To Address Nigerians Sunday Morning
Former Lagos Governor and current President, Bola Tinubu, is scheduled to address the nation on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at 7:00 am, amidst ongoing protests against economic hardship and high living costs across Nigeria’s 36 states and the capital, Abuja.
The address will be broadcast on television, radio, and other electronic media outlets through the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) networks.
The broadcast will be repeated at 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm on the same day.
The protests, which began on Thursday, have been fueled by the country’s worsening economic crisis, including high inflation rates, food shortages, unemployment, and wasteful spending by those in power.
The protesters, who have taken to the streets to express their displeasure, are demanding the restoration of petrol subsidies, reforms of the electoral umpire INEC and anti-graft agency EFCC, reduction of the President’s cabinet and general cost of governance, and immediate action to address food shortages and unemployment.
The protests have turned violent in some states, including Kano, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, Jigawa, and Nasarawa, where hoodlums have taken advantage of the situation to loot and destroy property.
The police have reported that seven persons have died during incidents related to the protests, but have denied that security agents were responsible for the deaths. Civil society organizations have condemned the police’s use of tear gas to disperse protesters.
The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Tinubu’s contenders in the last election, ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, have called on the President to address the nation and meet the demands of the protesters.
The protests, which are expected to last for 10 days, have entered their third day, with resilient youths pushing on, insisting that Tinubu meets their demands.
