IgboMustGo Call Reckless – Gov Sanwo-Olu Disowns Extremist Promoters
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has unequivocally disassociated himself and his administration from a recent call by some extremist elements within the Yoruba community, demanding that individuals of Igbo descent vacate Lagos State and other parts of the South-West region.
This call, which was made on the X microblogging platform (formerly Twitter) using the hashtag “#IgboMustGo,” is slated to begin on August 20th and end on August 30th, 2024.
The Governor’s response comes after former presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar expressed deep concern over the trend, emphasizing its opposition to Nigeria’s principles of unity and coexistence.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Governor Sanwo-Olu condemned the call as “reckless, divisive, and dangerous rhetoric.”
He reaffirmed that Lagos State remains a welcoming home to all Nigerian citizens, regardless of their ethnic background.
The Governor characterized the post as an attempt to sow discord between the Yoruba people and other tribes, particularly those who have made Lagos their permanent residence.
He urged residents to reject any attempts to create tensions in the State and called on security agencies to promptly investigate and bring to justice those responsible for the inciting post.
Sanwo-Olu assured residents that efforts would be intensified to ensure lasting peace in the State and encouraged them to disregard the post and any similar divisive content.
