Those Who Are Protesting Can Go Ahead, We’ll Be Here Eating — Akpabio’s Careless Statement Mocks Hungry Nigerian Youths

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has mocked those advocating for protests over the economic difficulties in Nigeria.

Speaking at an event organized by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in Rivers State on Tuesday, Akpabio stated that anyone interested in protesting is free to do so, but joked that they would continue to eat during the protests.

His comments come ahead of planned protests, which organizers have scheduled to begin on August 1 and conclude on August 10.

In an attempt to mitigate the situation, Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, met with some of the protest organizers in Abuja on Tuesday, suggesting a virtual protest. However, the organizers insisted on taking to the streets.

During the NDDC event, Akpabio expressed his lack of interest in any efforts to change the current government.

He acknowledged the widespread impact of the current economic situation but emphasized that it is expected to be temporary.

Addressing the NDDC Managing Director, Akpabio thanked him for his support and reiterated their collective commitment to the current government. He stated, “Those who want to protest can protest, but let us be there eating. I must thank the Niger Delta.”

Akpabio also acknowledged the severe damage caused by oil and gas activities in the Niger Delta region and assured that the National Assembly is prepared to enact legislation to address oil spills and environmental pollution in the area.

He stressed the importance of including specific issues faced by the Niger Delta in a communique, which would be presented to the President.

He further stated, “The ones that need legislation will come to us, the ones that need intervention will go to NDDC, the ones that need more money will go to the president and commander-in-chief, and I assure you that those issues will be addressed.”

It is noteworthy that the National Assembly, under Akpabio’s leadership, has scheduled an emergency session on the eve of the planned protests.
