Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, the daughter of President Bola Tinubu and the Iyaloja General of Lagos, has advised market women in Dosumu Market, Lagos, to caution their children against participating in the August 1 protest against economic hardship under her father’s administration.
In a video message, Mrs. Tinubu-Ojo emphasized, “Say no to protest,” urging the market women to dissuade their children from joining the demonstrations.
She stressed that there should be no protests in Lagos, asserting that the Lagos government is supportive of its residents.
She defended her father’s administration, noting that the central government, led by President Tinubu, had only recently taken office.
“Before you say a government is not doing well, let it last three years at least,” she added, calling for patience.
Reflecting on the EndSARS protests, a significant movement against police brutality led by Nigerian youth, Mrs. Tinubu-Ojo recounted how the initially peaceful protests turned violent.
She mentioned the destruction of property and the tragic incidents when thugs attacked protesters and Nigerian soldiers opened fire on the demonstrators.
“Prevention is better than treatment. We will not suffer loss of lives. Let everyone warn her children,” she cautioned, emphasizing the importance of avoiding violent confrontations and loss of lives.
Her remarks come amid heightened tensions as citizens plan nationwide demonstrations to protest economic hardships, particularly the rising food prices.
In response to the planned protests, President Tinubu has engaged with various stakeholders, including religious leaders, traditional rulers, governors, and security agencies.
Following these consultations, many religious leaders and traditional rulers have publicly opposed the protests.
Simultaneously, security agencies have intensified efforts to detain individuals supporting or organizing the demonstrations.
