Doyinsola Anuoluwapo David, popularly known as Doyin, a former contestant on Big Brother Naija, recently shared her perspective on the current hardships facing Nigerians in an interview with YouTuber Olufemi Daniel.
In the interview, Doyin admitted to being somewhat detached from the realities of everyday life in Nigeria. She revealed that she relies heavily on her domestic staff to handle shopping and is unaware of the prices of basic commodities.
Despite this detachment, she expressed sympathy for Nigerians experiencing hardship, acknowledging the rising costs of essential items such as wigs, makeup, and housing.
Reflecting on a visit to the market in Ogba, Lagos, Doyin recounted being moved to tears by the visible suffering of people struggling with high prices.
She described witnessing how even relatively small amounts of money could have a significant impact on people’s lives, highlighting the severity of the economic challenges faced by many.
Regarding her views on Nigerian politics, Doyin expressed disillusionment with the country’s leadership, describing Nigeria under current governance as problematic.
She criticized what she perceives as a lack of concern from those in power for the welfare of citizens.
In light of these observations, Doyin advocated for self-reliance and suggested that those who have the opportunity should consider relocating abroad for better opportunities.
She expressed hope for a future where all Nigerians can afford basic necessities and emphasized the importance of individuals taking initiative to secure their own and their families’ well-being.
Doyin said these when she featured on a recent podcast interview with YouTuber, Olufemi Daniel.
In her words, “I am the most detached Nigerian you can ever meet. I don’t even know what is happening. I don’t know the price of anything. I don’t go to the market. I send my chef and they don’t tell me what the price is,” she said.
“I hear there’s hardship in the country and I sympathise with Nigerians. I’m sure that it’s tough. I know because wigs are more expensive. Makeup, nails, cars, houses, everything is more expensive. Those things I know. But I’m not really into tomatoes.. I’m sure food is expensive.
“It’s sad because people are suffering, I’m sure because we see things on social media. I also went to the market one time at Ogba, and I cried that day because I saw how people were suffering. People were reacting to N50,000 like it was N5 million. That shows how badly people are suffering.
“It’s very sad. We hope that we’ll have a country one day where the average Nigerian can at least feed.
“That should be the basics. But we are not there yet. I hope we get there one day. I don’t want to talk about politics because I don’t really know much about politics.
“I just think Nigeria is a shithole with this kind of leadership. The issue is that the people that are obligated to care about us don’t care about us.
“I don’t know that there would be a solution anytime soon. So I tell people do your best to fend for yourself and family and if you have the opportunity to relocate abroad, do.”
