Obasanjo Meets With South-East Governors, Pushes For Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

On Tuesday, the South East Governors hosted former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who paid a solidarity visit to the governors.

During the visit, the governors decided to meet President Bola Tinubu to advocate for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

After a marathon meeting that lasted over seven hours, all the governors of the region were present. They announced the formation of a burial committee for the late Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu. The committee will be led by former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim.

Senator Hope Uzodinma, Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the South East Governors Forum, addressed the media. He expressed the Forum’s condolences to the families of Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, the entire South East region, and specifically the family of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.

Uzodinma shared that the Forum received a delegation consisting of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and His Royal Majesty Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, who visited the Forum in solidarity.

The Forum reviewed the report from the South East security and economic summit held in Owerri, Imo State, on September 28, 2023. They agreed to implement parts of the report focusing on security and economic integration within the South East region and committed to developing actionable plans for key issues identified.

The Forum resolved to visit President Bola Tinubu to discuss pressing issues concerning the South East region. Additionally, they decided to engage with the Federal Government to secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The Ogbonnaya Onu burial committee includes former Governor of Rivers State Chibuike Amaechi, who will serve as the committee’s Secretary, along with other Igbo leaders from the Igbo-speaking states.
