Hunger Is Too Much In The Country – Governor Makinde Laments Extreme Hardship In Nigeria

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has acknowledged the presence of widespread hunger in the country, expressing that the current situation does not reflect the nation’s potential or the aspirations of its people.

He emphasized the need for leaders nationwide to develop frameworks aimed at harnessing potential through mobilisation, sensitisation, and advocacy.

These comments were made on Tuesday during the signing of the Executive Bill to establish the Oyo State Mobilisation Agency for Socio-Economic Development (OYMASED).

Makinde assured that his administration remains committed to prioritising economic development to address major challenges within the state.

He also announced the appointment of Dr. Morohunkola Thomas, a former Commissioner for Education and his Special Adviser on Socio-Economic Development, as the Director General of OYMASED.

Makinde highlighted that the creation of this agency aligns with his administration’s vision of being defined not only by substantial infrastructure projects but also by the establishment of robust institutions.

Furthermore, the governor stressed the importance of transparent communication by the government to earn the trust of the people, explaining that OYMASED will significantly contribute to the ongoing mobilisation and sensitisation efforts across various demographics in the state.

During his speech, Makinde stated, “We are here today to sign one of the most important laws that will shape the future of this administration and our dear state, the Oyo State Mobilisation Agency for Socio-Economic Development Bill (2024).”

He extended gratitude to Prof. Jerry Ghana for his pioneering role as the Director of the Mass Mobilization for Self Reliance, Social Justice, and Economic Recovery (MAMSER), which inspired the design of OYMASED. He also thanked the Assembly members for their prompt passage of the Bill and for their continued collaboration in delivering good governance.

Makinde elaborated that OYMASED will play a crucial role in clarifying abstract ideas within state economic policies and educating the public about the law and political processes. The agency will serve as a central point for coordination among key government MDAs.

He stressed the importance of prioritising production at the national level, noting that mobilising people is essential for enhancing productivity. By broadening the productive base, the nation can better address the challenge of lifting people out of poverty and into prosperity.

Makinde concluded by stating, “There is hunger in the land, which does not reflect where we should be as a nation. Therefore, we must create a framework to harness our potential through mobilisation, sensitisation, and advocacy. This agency is a key part of that framework.

Additionally, he emphasized the necessity of continuous education when economic development is prioritized. He asserted that governments cannot win the trust of the people without clearly communicating their goals.

OYMASED will be pivotal in the ongoing efforts to mobilize and sensitize the various demographics in Oyo State for the pursuit of social, economic, political, and environmental development.
