National Grid Restored After Strike Suspension, Expect Light Soon – Electricity Employees

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) announced that the national grid has been restored following the suspension of the strike by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

NUEE National President, Adebiyi Adeyeye, confirmed this development during an interview with PUNCH today.

“The strike has been suspended, which means the grid has come back to normal. It is on already,” Adeyeye stated in a phone conversation with our correspondent.

Previously, NewdayReporters reported that the organised labour began a nationwide strike on Monday due to the Federal Government’s refusal to increase the proposed minimum wage from N60,000 and revert the Band A electricity tariff to N65 per kilowatt-hour from the current N206/KWh.

In response to the strike, electricity workers shut down the national grid early Monday morning, leading to a nationwide blackout.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) issued a statement on Monday alleging that its on-duty workers were assaulted and injured by union leaders who forcibly removed them from their posts.

However, Adeyeye refuted this claim, stating that the union members were merely withdrawn in line with the directives from the organised labour.

The strike has been temporarily suspended for five days to allow for further negotiations with the Federal Government concerning a minimum wage increase above N60,000.

At the time of this report, our correspondent noted that the national grid had not yet been fully restored.
