The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has instructed its members across Nigeria to join other workers in a nationwide indefinite strike that began today, Monday.
The directive was issued to ASUU branch leaders in various universities, urging them to ensure their members comply.
This instruction was communicated in a letter dated June 2, 2024, signed by ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke.
The letter, addressed to all branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators, stated that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had declared an indefinite strike starting on Monday, June 3, 2024.
This action is in response to the government’s failure to conclude renegotiations on the minimum wage for Nigerian workers and to reverse the hike in electricity tariffs.
As affiliate members of the NLC, ASUU branches are required to participate in the strike.
“Therefore, branch chairpersons are to mobilize all members to join the strike action,” Osodeke instructed.
Speaking on the directive, Prof. Adelaja Odukoya, the Lagos Zone Coordinator of ASUU, confirmed to the Nigerian Tribune on Monday that the zone would adhere fully to the union’s directive.
He expressed confidence that all seven universities within the Lagos zone, as well as those in other zones, would have no difficulty complying with the strike action.
