The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has called on organized labour to cancel its planned nationwide strike. The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, emphasized that such a strike could lead to increased tension and political instability within Nigeria.
Adejobi appealed to the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to return to the negotiation table with the Federal Government. The unions had initiated the strike to advocate for an increase in the minimum wage for workers.
The organized labour is demanding a new minimum wage of N494,000, while the Nigerian government is proposing N60,000.
In a statement, Adejobi said: “Considering the Federal Government’s recent declaration that the planned strike is illegal and premature, the Nigeria Police Force views this action as a potential catalyst for heightened tension and political instability.
“The NPF urges the organized labour to continue with the current discussions at the Tripartite Committee, which is dedicated to determining a new minimum wage. Shelving the planned strike is crucial to prevent significant hardships on the public and to maintain order and stability within the country.
“The Nigeria Police Force assures the public that adequate security measures have been deployed nationwide to ensure that citizens can carry out their lawful activities without interruption.
“Therefore, we encourage all citizens to remain calm and continue with their daily activities. At the same time, we urge the organized labour to act responsibly and legally, focusing on dialogue and lawful means to address their grievances.”
