House Of Reps Proposing Bill To Reserve Certain Number Of Seats For Women In Parliament – Ben Kalu

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, announced that the House is considering a bill to allocate special seats for women in parliament.

This statement was made during his speech at the 2nd Women of Divine Destiny Initiative (WODDI) Inspiring Women Summit (WIWS 2024) in Owerri, Imo State.

The event, themed “Illuminating the Power of an Inspired Woman,” was organized by WODDI, a non-profit founded by Dr. Nkechi Rochas Okorocha, wife of former Imo State Governor, Senator Rochas Okorocha.

The organization focuses on empowering women and helping them achieve their aspirations.

Kalu introduced the “Seat Reservation Bill,” which he co-sponsored with several colleagues.

The bill aims to amend the 1999 Constitution to ensure special seats for women in the legislature. He emphasized that the passage of this bill would significantly advance women’s participation in politics.

In his remarks, Kalu underscored the importance of gender equality and inclusiveness for equitable development.

He highlighted that women and girls make up 49.32% of Nigeria’s population, pointing out the urgent need for better representation in governance and institutions.

Currently, the House of Representatives is deliberating on this bill, which Kalu and his colleagues are championing. He also noted that the Peace In South East Project (PISE-P), a social development initiative, has made gender issues a priority in its programs.

Kalu praised Dr. Okorocha for her efforts in organizing the summit and encouraged the participants to fully harness their potential, now that they have been inspired and motivated.
