On Sunday, President Bola Tinubu inaugurated the construction of the 700km Lagos-Calabar coastal road project, referring to it as a “bold endeavour.” The ceremony took place on Victoria Island in Lagos State, attended by notable figures including the Minister of Works Dave Umahi, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and several governors.
President Tinubu declared the day his “bragging day,” emphasizing the road’s lasting impact. “We said we would do this road, and we are determined to see it through. This road will outlast us and future generations. That’s how you build a future,” he asserted.
He emphasized that the project transcends being just a road; it symbolizes hope, unity, and prosperity. Tinubu elaborated, “It will connect communities, bring prosperity, and create opportunities for millions. On the right side of the road lies opportunity, and on the left, prosperity. For our nation to thrive, we must be bold and courageous in our endeavours.”
Highlighting the anticipated benefits, Tinubu said the 700 km concrete road, upon completion, would be a major national landmark. He outlined several advantages, stating, “During construction, thousands will gain direct employment, and tens of thousands of artisans will benefit indirectly. This project opens economic opportunities for millions, fast-tracks community development, and improves access to production and marketing centers for 30 million people.”
He further added, “A straight line, as geometry teaches us, is the shortest distance between two points. This road will facilitate free movement of people and exploit the maritime industry’s potential. The recent United Nations approval for the extension of Nigeria’s continental shelf presents further opportunities.”
President Tinubu also mentioned the establishment of more export processing zones along coastal states as imperative. He assured that the region’s security would improve, enhancing tourism. He remarked, “With this road, you won’t need to travel to Miami. Our better weather and more sunshine offer unique opportunities. We can develop shops and economic warehouses while protecting our shoreline.”
Addressing the Ondo governor, he humorously noted the challenge of ocean surges and its impact on campaigning in the area. “The potential of this road is enormous. We have two spurs linking the Badagry-Sokoto expressway, currently under procurement activities.”
Tinubu concluded with confidence, “Don’t fear, we will complete this 700 km road successfully, marking a significant achievement for Nigeria. And we will undertake even more ambitious projects.”
