The Edo State Government has initiated the payment of the newly approved minimum wage of N70,000 to its workforce, as promised by Governor Godwin Obaseki.
This wage hike, effective from May 2024, marks a significant increase from the previous N40,000 minimum wage.
Governor Obaseki announced this commitment during the recent inauguration of the Labour House in Benin City, underscoring the government’s dedication to alleviating the economic challenges faced by the people of Edo State.
Chris Nehikhare, the State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, emphasized the government’s action in a statement released on Sunday.
He highlighted that the May salaries have been disbursed to reflect the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage, demonstrating the administration’s proactive approach to meeting its obligations to workers.
This move aligns with Governor Obaseki’s pledge to prioritize the welfare of Edo State employees amid economic hardships triggered by factors like fuel subsidy removal and other national economic decisions.
Nehikhare urged workers to remain dedicated to their responsibilities, contributing positively to the administration’s efforts as it nears its conclusion.
He emphasized the importance of reciprocating the government’s gesture by maintaining productivity and ensuring a successful conclusion to Governor Obaseki’s tenure.
