BIAFRA DAY: Don’t Put The Lives Of People’s Children In Danger — IPoB Warns UNIZIK, WAEC To Postpone Convocation, Exam In Biafra Land On May 30th

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB) has issued a warning to Professor Charles Esimone, Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka, Anambra State, and the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

They are demanding the postponement of the university’s convocation ceremony and the WAEC examinations scheduled for May 30th, 2024.

In a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, titled “Nnamdi Azikiwe University VC and WAEC Board to Postpone 30th May Convocation and WAEC on That Day,” IPoB stressed the significance of May 30th as Biafra Heroes Day, a day of remembrance for the Biafran people.

The statement addresses Professor Esimone directly, urging him to reschedule the convocation and exams to a different date, as May 30th is reserved for honoring Biafra heroes.

IPoB emphasized that all Biafrans observe a sit-at-home order on this day, making it inappropriate for any public events to be held.

They highlighted the importance of this day in commemorating those who lost their lives during the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970) and the ongoing struggle for Biafran independence.

IPoB warned that holding events on May 30th would show disrespect to the memories of Biafra’s fallen heroes and heroines.

They stated that the day is treated as a public holiday within Biafra territory, with all markets, schools, banks, and offices expected to be closed.

Movement is restricted except for essential services like journalists, health workers, and emergency services.

The organization also cautioned WAEC against conducting exams on this day, stating it would endanger the lives of students due to the sit-at-home directive. They urged all involved parties to avoid scheduling activities on Biafra Heroes Day to prevent potential dangers.

IPoB’s statement further warned that if the university and WAEC proceed with their plans despite this notice, they will be held responsible for any consequences. The organization emphasized that while they will not enforce the sit-at-home order, they will not be accountable for any incidents that occur due to violations.

The statement concluded by advising students, parents, and guests to exercise caution and avoid traveling on May 30th to ensure their safety. IPoB highlighted past incidents where Nigerian security forces allegedly targeted individuals defying sit-at-home orders to tarnish IPoB’s reputation.

They reiterated that the responsibility for safety lies with individuals and institutions, urging all to respect the sanctity of Biafra Heroes Day.
