Valentine Ozigbo, the PDP Governorship Candidate for the 2021 Gubernatorial election in Anambra, has criticized the current governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Soludo, on his X account for failing to fulfill his promise to conduct local government elections.
Ozigbo accused Soludo of violating the law by appointing individuals from his party, APGA, to these significant positions rather than holding elections.
In his statement posted on X and reported by NewdayReporters, Ozigbo highlighted that Governor Soludo, during his inaugural speech, had committed to conducting local government elections within two years, even pledging to do so immediately during his campaign. However, after two years in office, Soludo has neither conducted any local government elections nor made any preparations for them.
Ozigbo pointed out that instead of organizing elections, Soludo has chosen to allow APGA political operatives to nominate individuals for him to appoint as leaders for each of the 21 local government areas.
This approach, according to Ozigbo, contradicts section 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution. He accused Soludo of appointing his allies and political supporters to these positions to control the funds allocated to these areas, which he believes Soludo intends to use to bolster his political structures and secure his re-election.
Ozigbo also criticized the governor’s undemocratic practices in other areas, such as trade unions and critical sectors, which he claims have been mismanaged and replaced with loyalists and hired hands. He mentioned that the election process for the President General of town unions has been compromised in many towns, undermining the people’s choice.
Ozigbo questioned why governors feel entitled to appoint interim local government chairmen and change them at will, noting that presidents do not appoint interim governors. He emphasized the importance of keeping promises and adhering to the rule of law in governance.
He argued that proper local government elections are essential for strengthening democracy and allowing people at the grassroots level to choose their leaders, who can then be held accountable.
Ozigbo concluded by reminding Governor Soludo that he has failed to meet the expectations and social contract with the people of Anambra.
