Nigerian-American singer and dancer Korra Obidi has recently come under fire from Nigerians across social media after flying immediately to Hawaii in the United States following the completion of her $50,000 GoFundMe target.
Obidi created the GoFundMe account last Friday to raise funds for legal fees, aiming to overturn her ex-husband Justin Dean’s rights over their children.
She stated that she needed financial support to hire a good lawyer and set a target of $100,000 for the campaign. The account quickly gained traction, raising over $50,000 from more than 950 donors worldwide.
In her plea, Obidi emphasized her desire to fight for herself and her children, urging her fans and friends to assist her through the GoFundMe platform.
However, just days after reaching her fundraising goal, Obidi announced during a live session on Facebook that she was heading for a vacation in Hawaii.
This decision sparked outrage among her supporters, many of whom accused her of using the GoFundMe campaign as a means to finance her extravagant lifestyle rather than to pursue legal action against her ex-husband.
Critics pointed out that her swift departure for a vacation after reaching her fundraising goal suggested that her true intentions were not aligned with what she had presented to her supporters.
Comments from social media users ranged from disappointment to anger, with many feeling deceived by Obidi’s actions. Some accused her of being a “professional beggar” who manipulates her followers for personal gain, while others expressed disbelief and frustration at her sudden change in plans.
The public scrutiny intensified due to the ongoing divorce and custody battle between Obidi and Dean, with recent developments granting Justin Dean the right to restrict their two children from appearing in Obidi’s online content.
Obidi had previously accused Dean of abuse and gaslighting during their marriage, alleging that he was now subjecting their daughters to similar treatment.
While some defended Obidi, arguing that her personal choices were nobody else’s concern, the overwhelming sentiment online was one of disappointment and betrayal, as supporters felt misled by her actions following the successful fundraising campaign.
