Ugwu Augustus, a young man who earns his living by selling pure water on the streets, has achieved an incredible feat by scoring 309 in the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Despite leaving school two years ago, Augustus’s determination and hard work have paid off, as he secured a full scholarship into the university.
Alex Onyia, the founder of Educare, an organization that prepares candidates for the UTME, shared Augustus’s inspiring journey.
Onyia revealed that Augustus was challenged to join the UTME preparatory class with the promise of a full scholarship if he could score above 300 in the exam.
Augustus embraced the challenge wholeheartedly. Despite his daily routine of selling pure water on the streets, he attended the preparatory classes during the day.
Remarkably, he didn’t stop there; he also generously shared his knowledge with other students, often staying back after class to explain difficult concepts to them.
Onyia spoke of Augustus’s commitment to his studies, saying, “He comes to classes during the day and goes back to sell his pure water after the day’s classes.”
He emphasized Augustus’s dedication to helping others learn, as some students testified that Augustus would stay back after class to provide further explanations before heading out to sell pure water.
Augustus formed a close-knit study group with other determined students who were also aiming to score above 300 in the UTME to secure scholarships.
Their hard work paid off, as Augustus achieved an impressive score of 309.
Augustus’s success shines brightly amidst disappointing statistics from this year’s UTME. His story is a powerful testament to the value of perseverance, hard work, and a commitment to excellence.
