During the 2024 May Day celebration in Maiduguri, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Chairman, Mr. Yusuf Inuwa, expressed concern over the plight of some retirees in Borno State who were still receiving a meager pension of N4,000 per month.
He appealed to the state government for an upward review of the pension to enhance the social and economic wellbeing of retirees.
Inuwa also advocated for the implementation of the national minimum wage and the prompt payment of outstanding leave and transport grants to local government employees in the state.
He commended the Babagana Zulum administration for its efforts in improving workers’ welfare, including the implementation of promotion benefits, payment of gratuities to families of deceased workers, and providing subsidised buses for workers and the public.
The State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Mr. Babayo Hamma, supported the call for the adoption of the minimum wage approved by the Federal Government.
The state’s Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Kadafur, acknowledged the harmonious relationship between the government and labour.
He highlighted various training opportunities provided for workers, including a N2 billion interest-free facility, reaffirming the government’s commitment to the welfare and training of workers.
Additionally, Prof. Ibrahim Umara from the Political Science Department at the University of Maiduguri, emphasized this year’s May Day theme, “The People First,” and called for proactive measures to address the energy crisis in the country.
He suggested that the government adopt sound policies to enable the Dangote Refinery to supply fuel at a subsidised rate to meet local consumption needs.
