On Sunday night, assailants, suspected to be herdsmen, attacked the Nimbo community in the Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The attack resulted in the deaths of at least four people and left many others wounded. The deceased victims have been identified as Okeh Simon Ugwu, Oruku Okeh Chukwuebuka, Julius Ogbonna Odiegwu, and Gabriel Ugwor Ezea.
According to residents of the community who spoke to SaharaReporters, the attackers invaded the Ugwuijoro Nimbo village late Sunday night and targeted mourners, killing the four victims instantly.
Chijoke Okunna, one of the residents, reported that the bodies of the four victims have been recovered, and search parties have been formed to locate missing individuals.
Okunna further stated that seven people who sustained machete wounds have been taken to a hospital in Nsukka town for treatment.
This incident is reminiscent of a previous attack in April 2016 when herdsmen attacked the Oda Nimbo community, resulting in the deaths of at least 14 people and leaving 23 others seriously injured. Additionally, late last month, two brothers were killed by herdsmen in the same community.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the state police command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, stated on Monday morning that a press statement regarding the tragic incident would soon be released to the media.
