The Edo state government strongly denounced an alleged altercation involving Olumide Akpata, the gubernatorial candidate for the Labour Party in the state, and students from the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
According to reports, Akpata held a discussion session at the senior staff club, Oshodin pavilion in UNIBEN on Wednesday. Subsequently, Akpata claimed that he was confronted by students who felt excluded from the meeting.
However, a viral video surfaced showing a student alleging to have been shot in the leg by one of Akpata’s security personnel.
In response, Chris Nehikhare, the commissioner for communication and orientation, released a statement on Sunday condemning the violence associated with Akpata’s visit to UNIBEN.
The statement emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards such irresponsible behavior from both students and political candidates.
Furthermore, the government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and promised thorough investigations into the incident.
Residents were urged to carry on with their lawful activities while relevant authorities look into the matter.
