In Lagos, a federal judge sentenced Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, to six months in jail for mutilating naira notes, as reported by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The judge specified that Bobrisky would serve the full six-month term at Ikoyi Correctional Centre without the possibility of paying a fine.
Known for his controversial public appearances in feminine attire, Bobrisky underwent surgery in 2021 to enhance his feminine features. However, when asked about his gender during the court proceedings, he promptly identified himself as male.
Justice Awogboro, presiding over the case, condemned the act of defacing national currency, stating it tarnishes the country’s reputation. The judge emphasized the need to halt such practices, declaring, “Enough of people mutilating and tampering with our currencies. It has to stop.”
The charges against Bobrisky included tampering with N400,000 worth of naira notes during a social event at Imax Circle Mall in Jakande, Lekki, on March 24, 2024. The judge ruled that his jail term would begin on the same date as his arrest.
