The Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda on Monday flagged off the disbursement of N640,648,546 million in bursary allowances to both fresh and continuing students studying in 126 institutions of higher learning across the country and beyond.
Out of this amount meant to be disbursed to 47,935, N183,441,936 was for the payment of 14,443 fresh students while continuing students numbering 33,492 will be paid N443,576,000 respectively.
The Governor also flagged off the maiden presentation of the Katsina State Government Award of Academic Excellence to the best students with a higher CGPA (4.50 and above) at the event held at the Katsina State Scholarship Board.
“I am congratulating the students for receiving an award of excellent for their academic performance.
“I am really proud to see quite a large number of students of Katsina State origin who have a CGPA of far above 4.5. This is a very good testimony to the fact that the students of the State are highly committed and are making the state proud.
“I am urging other students to emulate the students we are celebrating today so that we celebrate them tomorrow.
“I want to assure them of our commitment to making the lives of students better.
“We will do everything we can to ensure prompt payment of scholarships to students of various health Institutions. It’s important to support students, especially at this time as the economic situation is not favourable to both the parents and the students.
“We will also make sure that we choose the best out of you and sponsor them for scholarship studies abroad so that they will have the kind of exposure that they need to provide the kind of leadership needed in the state in the future,” he assured.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Executive Secretary of the Katsina State Scholarship Board, Dr. Salisu Tsauri, explained that the board has in line with the Dikko Radda administration’s renewed hope agenda, initiated and introduced a prestigious presentation of the award of academic excellence to some students with outstanding academic performance with a cumulative grade points average (CGPA) of 4.50 and above for university and colleges of education students and 3.50 and above for students of polytechnics.
The objective of the award, which he said, is the first of its kind in the history of the Board, is to reward hard work as well as spur and encourage competition among the students.
“Your Excellency, the award, which is to be run on pilot testing, has a total of 210 students with outstanding performance drawn from tertiary institutions within Katsina State.
“We sought the patronage and assistance of corporate organizations and well-to-do philanthropists in the State to key in as part of their corporate social responsibility for the success of the award programme,” he stated.
