The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated South Africa as the country commemorates its 31st anniversary of Freedom Day, celebrated on April 27.
In a statement issued on Monday by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, extended warm felicitations to South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, on the significant occasion.
Ambassador Tuggar hailed Freedom Day as a momentous celebration of democracy’s victory over apartheid, emphasizing that it reflects the enduring resilience, unity, and determination that characterize South Africa’s national journey.
Highlighting the historical bond between Nigeria and South Africa, Tuggar recalled Nigeria’s pivotal role in supporting the anti-apartheid struggle through diplomatic efforts, material assistance, and moral backing, all rooted in the spirit of justice and pan-African solidarity.
He noted that as two of Africa’s largest economies and democracies, Nigeria and South Africa share a profound responsibility to promote peace, security, and inclusive development across the continent.
Looking forward, the minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening cooperation with South Africa across various sectors, including trade and investment, especially under the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), as well as initiatives in cultural exchange and youth empowerment.
Tuggar concluded by paying tribute to South Africa’s liberation heroes such as Walter Sisulu, Nelson Mandela, Govan Mbeki, and Thabo Mbeki. He emphasized Nigeria’s enduring solidarity with South Africa and reiterated the shared vision of building a prosperous, peaceful, and united Africa.
