The Osun State Government has officially approved a unified ticketing system for commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators across the state. This move is aimed at eliminating leakages, extortion, and the challenge of multiple ticketing within the transportation sector.
The development was announced in a statement released on Wednesday in Osogbo by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Sesan Oyedele.
According to Oyedele, the decision was reached during a crucial meeting held at the state secretariat between the government and the leadership of commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada riders.
Under the new arrangement, motorcycle operators are required to pay a daily fee of N100, while tricycle operators will pay N200. The commissioner emphasized that this policy is part of efforts by the current administration to boost internally generated revenue without tolerating financial leakages or exploitation of operators by unscrupulous individuals.
Oyedele assured that the government would not stand by and allow riders to be extorted, stressing that every operator would be treated fairly under the new system.
The Chairman of the Okada Riders Association, Comrade Sikiru Ayobami, who also spoke during the meeting, expressed gratitude to the commissioner for the government’s swift intervention. Ayobami pledged the association’s full cooperation with the government, promising that the leadership would uphold peace, unity, and fairness among its members without favouritism.
Other key officials present at the meeting included the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Isiaka Yahaya, and the Director of Transport Operations, Mr. Ayodeji Oyewole, alongside several other ministry directors.
In related developments, the Kogi State Revenue Service has initiated similar efforts to block revenue leakages, while even some notorious ‘agberos’ (street touts) have shown surprising support for female commercial drivers, indicating a shift towards a more organized transportation environment.
