Nationwide Protests Over Cybercrime Act Misuse, Economic Hardship, and Rivers State Crisis

Members of the Take It Back Movement staged coordinated protests on Monday across several Nigerian states, including Abuja, Lagos, Oyo, and Rivers. The demonstrations were aimed at decrying what the group described as the abuse of the Cybercrime Act, the deteriorating economic situation, and the controversial declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

In Lagos, protesters, easily identified by their distinctive orange berets, converged at the Ikeja Under Bridge area. Amid heavy security presence from the Nigeria Police Force and other law enforcement agencies, they chanted solidarity songs, voicing their dissatisfaction with the state of the nation.

Despite warnings from the police, who had earlier labeled the protest as “ill-timed” and “ill-conceived,” the movement pressed on with its planned demonstrations. Omoyele Sowore, the group’s leader and a former presidential candidate, maintained that the protest was both necessary and justified, emphasizing the importance of holding the government accountable.
