The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has announced the release of withheld local government allocations, assuring that necessary measures will be taken to ensure the timely payment of workers’ salaries.
During a meeting with Heads of Local Government Administrators in Port Harcourt, Ibas described the gathering as a significant step in the collective effort to restore stability and progress in the state.
Concerns Over Economic Hardship in the Niger Delta
Expressing deep concern over the persistent economic challenges in the Niger Delta, despite its abundant natural resources, Ibas condemned the continued suffering of the region’s people.
“This is unacceptable,” he stated firmly, emphasizing the need for transformation and financial accountability to address these issues effectively.
Commitment to Timely Salary Payments
Acknowledging the difficulties faced by local government workers due to delayed salary payments, Ibas reassured them that the withheld allocations had been released. He pledged that his administration would ensure that salaries are disbursed without further delay, providing much-needed relief to affected workers.
However, he issued a strong warning against financial mismanagement, stressing that strict accountability measures would be enforced.
Financial Accountability and Governance Standards
As part of his commitment to fiscal responsibility, Ibas, a retired Vice Admiral and former Chief of Naval Staff, directed all local government areas to submit their wage bills through the office of the Head of Service, ensuring that all payments are backed by relevant documentation.
He made it clear that his administration will not tolerate financial recklessness, vowing to scrutinize public fund management and take decisive action against any detected misuse or misappropriation.
“Good governance is not just a slogan; it is a commitment to changing the negative narrative within the next six months,” Ibas declared.
Strengthening Security at the Local Level
In addition to addressing financial and administrative concerns, the Sole Administrator emphasized the importance of security at the grassroots level. He urged local government administrators to collaborate with traditional rulers and security agencies to strengthen security within their respective domains.
“You must take the lead in ensuring security within your communities,” he instructed.
Support from Local Government Workers and NULGE
In response, Clifford Paul, the President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and Administrator of Port Harcourt Local Government Area, acknowledged the positive developments taking place in the state, despite ongoing political challenges.
He commended the Federal Government for appointing Ibas as Sole Administrator, attributing the decision to his leadership experience and competence.
Paul expressed optimism that the release of withheld allocations would bring relief to local government workers, who are currently owed two months’ salaries. He urged all stakeholders to seize this opportunity to rebuild trust, foster unity, and ensure sustainable development in Rivers State.
