Tensions flared in Nigeria’s House of Representatives as lawmakers engaged in a heated shouting match ahead of a crucial plenary session to discuss President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
In a video obtained by SaharaReporters, two female lawmakers were seen exchanging raised voices, with one of them repeatedly demanding, “Who is Nyesom Wike?” while the other responded in inaudible tones. Despite attempts by other lawmakers to pacify them, the confrontation continued, reflecting the deep divisions within the chamber regarding the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State.
The legislative debate follows President Tinubu’s decision to suspend Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and House of Assembly members, citing widespread instability that has paralyzed governance in the state. The move has sparked nationwide controversy, with critics arguing that the president’s actions undermine democratic principles.
Tinubu justified his decision by pointing to the prolonged crisis in Rivers State, stating that the ongoing conflict had effectively halted governance, preventing citizens from enjoying the benefits of democracy. He also condemned Governor Fubara for allegedly demolishing the Rivers State House of Assembly, an action Tinubu described as unjustifiable. The president further noted that mediation efforts by prominent figures had failed to resolve the crisis, necessitating federal intervention.
As the House of Representatives and the Senate prepare for formal debates on the emergency declaration, the political landscape remains charged, with growing calls for a more balanced resolution to the Rivers State crisis.
