‘Your Policy Is Not Popular’ – Bauchi State Governor Blasts Tinubu

The Governor of Bauchi State has urged President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the administration’s current economic policies, noting that they are widely unpopular among Nigerians. The governor made this appeal during a Christmas Day celebration organized in Bauchi on Thursday.

In his remarks, the governor emphasized the importance of humility and responsiveness in leadership, advising President Tinubu to prioritize the concerns of the masses over political pride.

“We are calling on the presidency and the federal government to change their approach. When a policy is not well-received, they should listen to the people rather than exhibit arrogance by insisting that their decisions are infallible. This is not an oligarchy or military rule. A good leader listens to the people, and this is what we expect from the federal government,” he stated.

The governor warned that disregarding public opinion could lead to unrest, adding, “Policies that ignore the plight of the masses are an invitation to anarchy and resistance, which is unacceptable. There is a lot of suffering in the land, and all levels of government must collaborate across party lines to provide relief to Nigerians. Leadership is not about pride or ego. If the situation was bad before I assumed office, I am open to hearing it and making necessary changes. The presidency must also adopt this attitude of listening and adjusting.”

The governor also called on Christians nationwide to pray for the country amid the economic challenges. Reflecting on the significance of Christmas, he extended gratitude to the Christian community for their support over the years.

“We join our Christian brothers and sisters in celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. On behalf of the Bauchi State government, I express our gratitude to the Christian community for their unwavering support, both for me personally and for my party, the PDP. Even when I was a member of the ANPP, Christians stood by me and voted for me despite my shortcomings. I appreciate this support deeply, including during my second-term bid,” he said.

The governor highlighted the shared heritage of Bauchi’s diverse population, emphasizing religious tolerance and unity. “You are my brothers and sisters. I am a special breed because many of you are my tribesmen. We come from the same source, even though we believe differently. Religion should not divide us. You are free to practice your faith, and I am free to practice mine. There should be no compulsion in religion.”

He urged Nigerians to pray for the nation and its leaders, stressing the need for divine intervention. “I call on you to pray for Nigeria and for all its leaders, including myself. Nigeria is going through difficult times. There is widespread hardship and anger. We must ask God to help us overcome these challenges. Speaking out is necessary, but it should be done respectfully, without insults.”

Governor Mohammed’s appeal follows widespread criticism of President Tinubu’s economic policies, which have exacerbated hardship for many Nigerians. His comments underscore the need for inclusive governance and collective efforts to alleviate the country’s challenges.
