Okija, Anambra State, has been thrown into mourning today, Saturday as a stampede during a rice distribution event claimed the lives of over 30 people, including women and youths. The rice was being distributed by renowned philanthropist and oil magnate, Obi Jackson.
Eyewitnesses reported that the chaotic scene unfolded when an overwhelming crowd tried to fight their way to collect the food items, leading to loss of lives. The absence of adequate crowd control measures is believed to have exacerbated the situation, resulting in the stampede.
Videos circulating on social media show harrowing images of lifeless bodies on the ground, while emergency responders worked tirelessly to rescue survivors. Several injured individuals have been rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.
Confirming the incident, Charles Aburime, the Chief Press Secretary to the Anambra State Governor, stated that the state government is monitoring the situation and will release an official statement soon.
This heartbreaking tragedy comes shortly after a similar incident in Ibadan, Oyo State, where over 35 people, mostly children, lost their lives during a carnival stampede. Earlier in March, a stampede during rice distribution at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, also claimed multiple lives.
As rescue efforts continue, the number of casualties may rise. Obi Jackson, known for his humanitarian work, is yet to comment on the incident. The state government and emergency services are urging citizens to remain calm while investigations are conducted to prevent future occurrences.
