The Federal Government has announced the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University. This decision was disclosed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a press briefing at the State House on Monday.
The announcement followed a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The renaming is intended to honor Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, in recognition of his contributions to the nation and in celebration of his recent 90th birthday milestone.
According to the Minister, the decision reflects the government’s commitment to recognizing and celebrating national icons.
Idris further explained that the proposal for the name change will be submitted to the National Assembly for formal approval, as required by due process.
