JUST IN: EFCC Arrests Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, Detains Him In Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Yahaya Bello, a former governor of Kogi State, over allegations of financial misconduct during his tenure as governor from 2016 to 2023. The arrest reportedly occurred around 1:00 PM at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, where Bello is currently being interrogated by investigators.

Contrary to claims by some media outlets that Bello voluntarily surrendered himself to the EFCC, sources have confirmed that his arrest was executed by the Commission’s operatives. Sahara Reporters, citing an insider, revealed that Bello was brought into the EFCC office at exactly 12:54 PM. He is now being detained as part of ongoing investigations.

The EFCC’s inquiry into Bello’s administration centers on allegations of embezzlement, abuse of office, and mismanagement of state funds. Specifically, the former governor is being accused of laundering funds totaling N110 billion. This figure is part of fresh charges filed against him by the EFCC in late September 2024. These charges build on earlier accusations filed by the Commission, which alleged money laundering offenses amounting to N80.2 billion. Bello was previously charged alongside his nephew, Ali Bello, and two others—Dauda Suliman and Abdulsalam Hudu.

In November, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama, Abuja, refused to grant bail to some of Bello’s co-defendants in the N110.4 billion case. Justice Maryanne Anenih dismissed the oral bail applications of Abdulsalam Hudu and Umar Oricho, who are listed as co-defendants in the case. The EFCC’s counsel emphasized that the court’s earlier ruling on October 3, which allowed a 30-day period for specific legal orders, was still in effect. As a result, the prosecution and defense agreed to adjourn proceedings to November 27.

The EFCC has maintained its position on seeking accountability for the alleged financial infractions, underscoring the gravity of the charges against Bello and his associates. Further updates are expected as the case progresses in court.
