Former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has urged Nigerian youth to remain committed to their country despite the current economic challenges and the rising trend of emigration among young Nigerians.
According to The Cable, Fashola shared these sentiments while addressing graduates at the 8th and 9th combined convocation ceremonies of Elizade University in Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, on Saturday.
He encouraged the graduates to aim for influential roles within Nigeria rather than seeking opportunities abroad, highlighting that real leaders stand by their nation through challenging times.
Fashola posed thought-provoking questions to emphasize his message, asking, “Why did Mrs. Folorunso Alakija stay? Why didn’t Chief Tunde Afolabi, who has significantly contributed to Nigeria, leave? Why are they still here?” He referenced these prominent Nigerians as examples of successful individuals who, despite facing hardships, chose to remain in the country.
Fashola also cited Chief Michael Ade-Ojo, founder of Elizade University, who persisted through difficult circumstances in his youth and invested in Nigeria. “If Chief Ade-Ojo had left Nigeria, Elizade University wouldn’t exist today,” Fashola remarked, underscoring how Ade-Ojo’s commitment has led to lasting contributions to Nigeria’s education sector.
Chief Michael Ade-Ojo also spoke at the event, expressing pride in Elizade University’s role in producing high-caliber graduates and enhancing Nigeria’s educational landscape.
He encouraged the university to prioritize research and entrepreneurship as central to its curriculum, as these areas would equip students with the skills needed to support Nigeria’s growth and address its developmental needs.
