JUST IN: I’m Embarrassed By My Actions — Abia House Of Reps Member Alex Ikwechegh Apologizes To Nigerians, Says He Needs Counselling

Alex Ikwechegh, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, recently issued a public apology after a video surfaced showing him assaulting an e-hailing (Bolt) driver named Abuwatseya. The incident, which reportedly occurred at Ikwechegh’s residence in Maitama, Abuja, has sparked significant public outrage, with many Nigerians condemning his actions.

The incident unfolded when Abuwatseya arrived to deliver a package specifically, snails to Ikwechegh, who allegedly became angry when the driver requested that he step outside to collect the item. The video, which went viral on Monday, shows a visibly enraged Ikwechegh repeatedly slapping and insulting the driver.

At one point, Ikwechegh is seen threatening to make the driver “disappear” without facing any repercussions. This display of aggression prompted widespread criticism, as well as intervention from law enforcement authorities.

In response to the backlash, Ikwechegh released a formal statement, expressing regret for his actions. He acknowledged that his conduct did not meet the standards expected of a public official and issued a personal apology to the driver, his constituents, and the public.

“As a public servant,” Ikwechegh stated, “I recognize the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people. My behaviour fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry.” He also expressed remorse for the harm and embarrassment his actions caused to the driver, his constituents, and the nation.

Ikwechegh went on to confirm that he is cooperating with the Nigerian Police in their investigation of the incident, pledging to uphold accountability and to support the police efforts to ensure that justice is served. He also commended the Nigeria Police Force for their swift response and for protecting the rights of citizens.

In his apology, Ikwechegh acknowledged the condemnation he received from both his political party and the Nigerian Police, viewing it as a demonstration of a shared commitment to the law and citizens’ rights.

He disclosed that he is taking proactive steps to address the underlying issues that may have contributed to his behavior, including seeking professional counseling to prevent a recurrence. Additionally, he plans to engage in community service initiatives focused on fostering respect, empathy, and understanding.

Calling for unity and understanding, Ikwechegh encouraged Nigerians to join him in promoting a culture of respect, tolerance, and dignity for all. “We must work together to build a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect,” he said. “Thank you for your understanding, and I hope that you will join me on this journey toward healing and growth.”

The Nigerian Police have since summoned Ikwechegh for questioning at their Maitama Divisional Headquarters and criticized him for bringing the office of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, into disrepute by daring the driver to contact the Inspector General after the assault.
