The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a lawmaker, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, over an alleged assault on a driver in Abuja. The command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, stated that Ikwechegh is currently at the Maitama Police Station, where he is undergoing questioning.
According to Adeh, the incident was reported by the victim, identified as Stephen Abuwatseya. Preliminary investigations suggest that Abuwatseya, a cab driver, was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh when an argument broke out regarding the delivery method.
During the altercation, Abuwatseya was reportedly subjected to physical assault.
The FCT Police Command expressed serious concern over Ikwechegh’s dismissive attitude towards law enforcement during the incident. Following the alleged slap, Ikwechegh reportedly challenged Abuwatseya, saying, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” which the command described as a troubling display of contempt towards police authority.
The Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the case.
The command assured that it is committed to conducting an impartial inquiry and ensuring that justice is served. Once the investigation concludes, any appropriate legal actions will be pursued.
