President Bola Tinubu has implemented a new directive limiting the number of vehicles that ministers and heads of federal agencies can use in their official convoys to a maximum of three. Under this new policy, no additional vehicles will be provided to them for their movements.
The announcement was made in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, this cost-cutting measure is part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing government expenditure, as outlined by the President.
In line with these efforts, it was noted that earlier in January, President Tinubu had already taken significant steps to curtail government spending by reducing the size of his entourage on foreign trips from 50 to 20 officials. For domestic trips, the number was reduced to 25 officials. Similarly, the Vice President’s entourage was reduced to five officials for foreign trips and 15 for local trips.
The directive issued today also addresses the security details assigned to ministers and heads of agencies. President Tinubu ordered that these officials may have no more than five security personnel. The security team should consist of four police officers and one officer from the Department of State Services (DSS). No additional security personnel will be assigned beyond this limit.
The President further instructed the National Security Adviser (NSA) to engage with the military, paramilitary, and security agencies to work out a suitable reduction in vehicle allocations and security personnel deployment across these agencies.
All officials impacted by this directive are expected to comply with the changes immediately, highlighting the urgency and importance of this cost-cutting initiative.
