MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited, a subsidiary of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC), has officially received the license to distribute electricity within Enugu State, granted by the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC).
This significant development marks the end of EEDC’s operations in Enugu State and the transition of regulatory oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to EERC.
The license presentation event, which took place on Tuesday, celebrated the completion of the transition period. During the ceremony, the Chairman/CEO of EERC, Mr. Chijioke Okonkwo, handed over an interim distribution license to MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited.
Okonkwo urged MainPower to continue providing electricity services to Enugu State citizens while collaborating with EERC to ensure long-term improvements in service efficiency, reliability, sustainability, and accountability.
This regulatory shift means that NERC will no longer oversee electricity operations within Enugu State, and MainPower has fully taken over from EEDC, which will continue to operate in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Imo states.
Mr. Kester Enwereonu, a member of MainPower’s Board of Directors, described this transition as a pivotal moment in the power sector’s reforms. He stated that MainPower is well-prepared to lead the way forward, leveraging re-engineered processes, advanced technology, and innovative tools to overcome traditional challenges.
Enwereonu emphasized that technology would play a central role in the company’s operations, allowing for data-driven insights to optimize efficiency and service delivery.
Enwereonu also assured the public that MainPower is committed to building a modern, future-ready electricity distribution network that can reliably deliver sustainable and uninterrupted power to homes and businesses across Enugu State.
He referred to the transition as a bold step toward a better future for the state, expressing confidence in MainPower’s ability to achieve meaningful improvements with the regulatory guidance of EERC, operational excellence, and stakeholder support.
The Managing Director of MainPower, Dr. Ernest Mupwaya, was also in attendance at the event. This transition aligns with the new legal framework established by President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the Electricity Act into law, which allows individual states to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity independently.
With this law, states are expected to establish their own regulatory bodies, like EERC in Enugu, to oversee their electricity markets and issue licenses to prospective investors. As a result, EEDC’s role in Enugu State has been fully transferred to MainPower, with the EERC taking over regulatory responsibilities from NERC.
